Mysa is Turning ONE! | Mysa Home Styling | Interior Design & Styling | Minneapolis Minnesota

The Beginning

When I think about how Mysa started, I know that it began many years ago, in a blue two-story house on the corner where I was constantly rearranging my room, helping my parents make decorating decisions, and sneakily making my siblings’ rooms more presentable.

I’ve always had a love for things that are pretty… in fact, my catch phrase when I was really little was “dis pitty” (this is pretty). And besides changing my outfit countless times a day (sorry mom!), that also came out in how I interacted with the spaces around me. I’ve always had a desire to create beautiful spaces.

Learning & Growing

In college it came out as pursuing a degree in art—graphic design to be exact. I could make pretty things on my computer screen! I also fell down the giant rabbit hole that is design blogging during this time, and have since followed over 100 home and design blogs. I also may have annoyed more than one roommate throughout college with my incessant sketching out what our next room arrangement could be and then wanting to arrange it at 10pm. 🙂

After college I pursued college ministry for a couple years, which was an incredible experience, and was the first time I had my first (non-dorm) room again in four years. I continued to experiment with layouts, decor, and the like, but it wasn’t until my husband and I got married a couple years later and moved into our own place that my passion for interior design was able to really blossom.

Our first place was a four-plex with two bedrooms, a living, dining, and sun room, and a kitchen and bathroom. I just about went crazy! Decorating and furnishing that place was so much fun and I learned a lot during our year there.

To save money for a house, we decided to downsize, and somehow ended up renting a whole house (it was cheaper than our current place), so that was even more fun! I feel like that rental house is really where my current style started to develop. However, there was so much I wanted to do to it that we simply couldn’t since it was a rental.

The Push

This desire to continue using my decorating skills led me to question my line of work (I was doing admin work), and was really getting my creative bones itching. I had multiple friends and family who saw my home and would exclaim how beautiful it was (which was saying a lot since it was a super gross house—saving money, remember?), and even offered to pay me to come help them with their house.

These kind compliments and offers got me thinking—why couldn’t I do the same thing I love doing to my house in others’ homes? Why couldn’t I help other people find joy and contentment in their homes, just like I had in our run-down rentals?

So with lots of encouragement from my husband, feedback from my friends and family, and courage from the Lord, in May of 2016 I launched Mysa Home Styling. And I’m SO glad I did! Because of Mysa I’ve had the opportunity to love on people’s homes with them, the opportunity to provide education and encouragement, and the opportunity to connect with so many wonderful people!

To finish up the story, we now own that house that we were saving up for, and it’s been such a blast to get to make all the changes we want to.

“If you don’t try…”

Over the past year of business ownership I have learned many lessons—about marketing, content creation, pricing, accounting, and all kinds of other business ideas. But the biggest thing I’ve learned is the very thing that tipped me over the edge to start Mysa, the thing that my husband said to me one night as I sat in bed with tears of fear and uncertainty rolling down my face—”If you don’t try, how will you ever know?”

I’ve learned that trying something scary is far better than never knowing if you would have succeeded. Never knowing if your dream could be a reality is more scary than the fear of failure. So what’s that dream of yours? If you don’t try, how will you ever know?

This week I’m celebrating Mysa’s one year birthday! If you’ve ever considered booking my services or purchasing my guide to discovering your style, now’s the time! I’m also doing a giveaway on my Facebook page, so head over there to enter!

I’ve read your story and watched you bloom from a promising bud as a little girl, into a full bloom now with your home styling business. I love reading your blogs, looking at your Instagram and hearing all about Mysa Homestyling. I’m quite proud as well, because for anyone reading this, you need to know that Heather is my grand daughter! I experienced some of Heather’s rearranging when she would get a wild hair to move things around, while we were at the blue house for visits during her childhood. Cheering you on as you make people happy when you help them make their homes cozy!

It is so amazing that a year ago, you took the “bull by the horns” and did what you dreamed of, not many people have the courage to do that!

Thanks, Tookie! It really was the support of my family and friends, as well as surrendering my fears to God, that made that leap possible! It’s been quite the ride.

Heather, I am your Nana’s friend from Nebraska and she sent this to me. Loved reading your story. I so wish I had your talent for decorating. I just moved to NC and needed an area rug and spent so many hours looking on Amazon, Wayfair, Home Goods. I did find one eventually but could have used your help! Keep following your dreams! Aren’t you glad you did!

Hi Debbie! How fun! My nana does like to share! 🙂 I’m glad you were eventually able to find a rug that worked. If you ever have a design dilemma like that in the future, you can always hire me for virtual styling, where we work over email, phone, or skype! I could do the online searching for you! 🙂

And yes! I am so glad I followed my dreams! It’s been such a fun experience, and allowed me so many great opportunities.
